Playing baseball was only a dream for children with physical or mental challenges, a game played by the other kids. But that all changed in 2005 when the Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League was created. A new, specially designed, fully accessible field was built along with a pavillion, concession stand and accessible restrooms. Through the continued support of our sponsors and volunteers the league continues to grow. The success of the youth league and the need to serve older players led to the formation of an adult league. The combined youth and adult leagues serve over 300 participants each year. The players are supported on the field by "Buddies," and their family and friends cheer from the bleachers. Frequently, a picnic is offered during games, providing an opportunity for fellowship and fun. The Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League field is located in Lexington, Kentucky in the youth baseball complex at Shillito Park. We invite you to be a part of the excitement, to cheer on the players, be a volunteer, or become a sponsor.

THE IMPACT OF YOUR GIVING

Registration Fees

Your support enables the Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League to maintain low registration fees for participants. Additionally, your gift will allow us to take the next steps to providing financial assistance, ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to play.

Supplies

It takes more than balls and bats to run a baseball league. We offer a full game day experience to our participants that includes not only taking care of the players but also their families and our many volunteers. One way we do this is by providing a picnic at the ballpark during the games. In addition to game equipment we also provide tables, grills, coolers and other items that make the Miracle League experience as enjoyable as possible for all involved.

Maintenance and Improvements

The Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League playing field is a specialized surface that needs special care to maintain it as a fully accessible playing surface. Periodically the field needs to be resurfaced and about every 10 years it needs to be completely replaced. Your support will help us prepare for these significant expenses to maintain an enjoyable and safe playing environment.

About The Bluegrass Miracle League

Mission

"To provide children and adults with special needs the opportunity to grow and develop through playing baseball in a fun, barrier-free, family environment.”

About

The Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League is a baseball program for both youth and adults with special needs. The program provides opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to play baseball, regardless of their abilities. The youth league consists of both a spring and fall season and is played on Saturdays at Shillito Park in Lexington, KY. Each team consists of about 12 players and is led by a Coach and an Assistant Coach. Every player has the opportunity to bat every inning. The games consist of two innings or about an hour of play, and always end in a tie. The TBML also uses volunteer "buddies” to assist each participant during the games. Each inning, every player gets a hit, every player gets on base, and every player scores. It’s all about having fun!

The Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League also includes a league for adults. The adult league also plays at Shillito Park, and games are played on Tuesdays during both the spring and fall. The day-to-day operations of the Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League are managed by the YMCA of Central Kentucky, along with the TBML Board of Directors. To learn more about the program, or to register, please contact league director Kevin Haury at khaury@ymcacky.org or at (859) 367-7515. You can also use our Contact Page or Register Page.

History

Inspired by Miracle League programs across the country, The Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League was founded in 2006 with the help of the Rotary Club of Lexington and countless community leaders, organizations and volunteers to provide children ages 5-19 with any type of physical, developmental or emotional disability an opportunity to play baseball. The facility, located at Shillito Park in Lexington, KY, consists of a truly unique rubberized playing surface with all the traditional markings of a baseball field painted onto it. This cushioned flat playing surface, along with covered dugouts, are specifically designed for safety and are accessible for players with wheelchairs, walkers, or who may be visually impaired. The facility also includes a barrier-free, covered picnic pavilion. The league currently serves over 150 players from in and around Central Kentucky each season.

VOLUNTEER

Volunteers: The Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League owes its success to the countless volunteers that help each and every game, each and every season! One of the most important parts of the TBML is the "buddy” system. Each game every player is paired with a "buddy” to assist them both on and off the field. Volunteers are also needed for coaches and assistant coaches. You can also volunteer your organization to be "buddies” or to host a game day. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, please contact league director Kevin Haury.
